چکیده

Sub-arcsecond resolution Chandra observations of η Car reveal a 40 × 70 ring or partial shell of X-ray emission surrounding an unresolved, bright, central source. The spectrum of the central source is strongly absorbed and can be fit with a high-temperature thermal continuum and emission lines. The surrounding shell is well outside the optical/IR bipolar nebula and is coincident with the Outer Shell of η Car. The X-ray spectrum of the Shell is much softer than that of the central source. The X-ray Shell is irregular and only correlates well with optical features where a bright X-ray knot coincides with a bright feature of the Outer Shell. Implications for the binary model of the central source are discussed. Subject headings: stars:individual(η Carinae) stars:early-type X-rays:stars

Detection of Gamma-ray Emission from the Eta-carinae Region

We present the results of extensive observations by the gamma-ray AGILE satellite of the Galactic region hosting the Carina nebula and the remarkable colliding wind binary Eta Carinae (η Car) during the period 2007 July – 2009 January. We detect a gamma-ray source (1AGL J1043-5931) consistent with the position of η Car. If 1AGL J1043-5931 is associated with the Car system our data provide the l...

Fermi Large Area Telescope Observation of a Gamma-ray Source at the Position of Eta Carinae

The Large Area Telescope (LAT) onboard the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope detected a γ-ray source that is spatially consistent with the location of Eta Carinae This source has been persistently bright since the beginning of the LAT survey observations (from 2008 August to 2009 July, the time interval considered here). The γ-ray signal is detected significantly throughout the LAT energy band (i...

Hard X-ray identification of η Carinae and steadiness close to periastron

Context. The colliding-wind binary η Carinae exhibits soft X-ray thermal emission that varies strongly around the periastron passage. It has been found to have non-thermal emission, thanks to its detection in hard X-rays using INTEGRAL and Suzaku, and also in γ-rays with AGILE and Fermi. Aims. This paper attempts to definitively identify η Carinae as the source of the hard X-ray emission, to ex...

Eta Car and Its Surroundings: the X-ray Diagnosis

X-ray emission from the supermassive star Eta Carinae (η Carinae) originates from hot shocked gas produced by current stellar mass loss as well as ejecta from prior eruptive events. Absorption of this emission by cool material allows the determination of the spatial and temporal distribution of this material. Emission from the shocked gas can provide important information about abundances throu...

Accretion by the Secondary in Eta Carinae during the Spectroscopic Event: I. Flow Parameters

We examine the influence of the gravity of the companion (the secondary) to the massive primary star η Carinae on the winds blown by the primary and the secondary. The two winds collide with each other after passing through two respective shock waves, and escape the system while strongly emitting in the X-ray band. While during most of the 5.5 years orbital period, the companion’s gravity has a...
